Atomix Productions' Virtual DJ Free not only mixes and mashes beats from a classic two-deck console, but also it serves as audio central for your system since it also records audio and video, burns discs, and even broadcasts online using a radio server or your own PC as a client-limited server. A survivor, Virtual DJ has been making music for millions of users for more than a decade. The latest version adds new controllers and full compatibility with Windows 8 multitouch surfaces. Like similar tools, Virtual DJ takes its functional and style cues from the traditional pro DJ console, with the side-by-side, turntable-style scratch pads surrounded by duplicate control sets. You can change its skin from the Config. button on the top edge. The lower half of Virtual DJ's interface is tabbed for those features you need the most: Browser, Sampler, Effects, and Record; each with a submenu accessing main features. For instance, under Record, we could Record Audio, Burn CD, Broadcast, and Record Video. The Sampler has 12 tracks with large, easy-to-see sliders and Play and Rec buttons, while the Effects tab offers both Sound and Video Effects as well as Video Transitions. 

We started with the Browser, which is anchored by a specialized, music-oriented tree view in the left sidebar. We dragged some MP3s into the right and left decks. Virtual DJ showed each song's spectral energy in a small graph in each deck and in a larger graph along the top displaying sampled selections. Virtual DJ automatically integrated our selection into the main spectral view (which can be grabbed, dragged, and altered) and loaded it on the scratch pad. A cool touch: Virtual DJ illuminates and aligns sampled tracks on the pad's rim, just as if they'd been the grooves on vinyl records.

There are four scanning modes, 'Reputation Scan', 'Quick Scan', 'Full System Scan' and 'Custom Scan', each with its very own configuration settings. Of course, the third one takes a lot of time and uses a moderate amount of computer resources, but it checks every single file on your machine to make sure you're on the safe side.

Norton Antivirus comprises basically everything to help you stay away from malicious files and online attacks, including an antivirus, antispyware, intrusion prevention, email and browser protection, but also the so-called 'Download Intelligence' to check your file transfers on the go.

Another interesting feature is the so-called 'Facebook Scan' that automatically scans your Facebook wall to verify the published links.

A problem we experienced during our test is related to the update process which seems to take ages when running Norton Antivirus for the first time. It depends on the Internet connection indeed, but the first update needed a lot of time to download, unpack and install all the files.

A really good thing is the fast scanning process that's also quite friendly with computer resources. Plus, it is very efficient thanks to the virus definition updates that are delivered very often, sometimes even several times an hour.

All in all, Norton Antivirus remains one of the top choices when it comes to efficient antivirus solutions.

Avira AntiVir Personal seems to be the right choice for all those who are searching for a solution with decent performance and regular updates, just to be sure infections stay away from their precious data.

The developers over at Avira have always offered a well-organized interface, and their latest antivirus solution makes no exception to this rule. Fortunately, although it's supposed to fight against viruses, the application comes with a handy user interface that lets you configure it with ease. Avira free

Avira only offers a bunch of settings, so advanced users should have no problem to deal with them, although beginners should too find the whole application quite easy to use.

The installation process is not that pleasant though. If you have Windows Defender installed, Avira advises you to remove it before continuing the installation. We chose “No” because it would make much more sense to use Avira together with Windows Defender, and not as a single solution.

Continuing the installation brings you to another important moment: you must decide whether you wish to install a toolbar, which is actually the reason why the app is marked as ad-supported.

Scanning is the kind of process that requires minimal interaction from the user. Choose the hard-disk you want to scan and let Avira do its magic. Scanning is not too fast though, and you may have to wait a little while to get rid of the worms. The speed of the scanning process obviously depends on the amount of data stored on your computer, so more files means more time.
Avira promises to protect your computer against viruses, worms and Trojans AntiDialer protection as well as against dialers and rootkits, spyware and adware. In addition, there are dedicated tools to provide mail and web protection, plus a separate firewall to make sure you're going to stay on the safe side.

In the end, Avira's antivirus solution seems just right for those who want nothing more than a software capable of blocking viruses and Trojan horses. The interface is more than decent, but a faster scanning process would be great. Still, what you pay is what you get, and Avira is clearly a smart pick.

Free WMA to MP3

Free WMA to MP3 is a fine converter, if all you need is to change over your WMA files. Sadly, most people will want a converter with more format support, and those aren't terribly difficult to find. This app does make up for that obvious lack of support with quality performance, though.

This app takes WMAs -- and only WMAs -- and turns them into MP3s or WAV files. You can't input any other file type, meaning you have to keep the original handy if you ever want the file to go back to its original format. There isn't any support for FLAC or other popular formats, either. In spite of that, Free WMA to MP3 does a fantastic job when it comes to converting. It never took more than ten seconds to get the file converted when we tested it, and it always came out sounding exactly the same to our ears. So, unless you're an audiophile, you won't notice any difference, whatsoever. The app's installation process is regrettably full of land mines. We had to opt out of four different add-on programs that tried to take over our browser and other parts of our computer.

That makes an already narrow app even harder to recommend. While Free WMA to MP3 does its job just fine, there are so many other audio converters that support far more formats without sacrificing any performance. You might be better off with those instead of this, as easy and effective as it is.

Free RAR Extractor

Free RAR Extractor is fine at unpacking compressed files, but it doesn't do anything to help you compress new batches of files. So, if you spend all of your time opening zipped files, you may prefer this widget over a more complex compression option. Otherwise, stick to the big names in zipping like 7zip and PeaZip.

This program unzips compressed files you receive, so you can access all of the individual files inside. Though it name-drops RAR, it supports just about every compression style you can think of, including the popular alternatives to RAR like ZIP. It never took more than a few seconds for Free RAR Extractor to unlock the files we used in testing, which is not bad at all. The app has a stylish menu that would work really well with touchscreen computers, but it doesn't offer a ton of options. This program doesn't let you compress files like other software might, so you're stuck just unlocking folders with the program. By default, it saves your files in the same folder they came from, so you can easily find them later.

It is hard to imagine anyone wanting compression software that only works one way. If you can find a reason to download a one-way program over another zipping program that offers you two-way compression, this is probably the best one you can find, though. We like that Free RAR Extractor is easy to use and is future-focused, thanks to its touch-friendly layout.

MP4 To MP3 Converter

MP4 to MP3 Converter is fine when it works; that just doesn't happen nearly as often as you'd like. The program falls victim to random crashes more often than it actually converts your files to a new format. That, the limited file support, and the frequent add-ons during the install make this program a tough sell.
This program takes MP4 video files and turns them into listenable MP3 audio files. 

That is, when it works. The program crashed more than half of the times we tested it, usually any time we tried to use a file that was more than one minute in length -- which are most of the files you'll use with this program, since it's a great way to turn music videos into audio files. It was even more annoying that the program didn't give any status updates as it was working its magic, so we never knew if it was going to crash. The program, itself, is just a basic menu that lets you put a file in and then determine where you want the eventual output file to live. You can't choose any format other than MP3 for output, and you can't send files that aren't MP4 at the program. When you're installing MP4 to MP3 Converter, it will try to get you to install four other programs that could take over your browser and search.

That doesn't help a program that was already not doing itself any favors in the performance category. Even though it's a fine converter, too many other programs can do everything it does and more. They all do it without the frequent crashes, as well.

In the middle is a small, integrated upsell ticker that links users to any of GOM's other products or video content. 

Though this can easily be removed by switching to another skin, it's far less intrusive than other attempts at product promotions that we've seen in many other apps.
Right above is a timeline that's extremely narrow; this is fine for standard keyboard/mouse users but hardly ideal for touch. Right-clicking anywhere on the player will expose even more detailed options and audio/video-related tweaks like those found in other open-source players. You can add custom audio EQ effects, tweak subtitle lengths, and even take burst screenshots to capture particular moments from videos. However, some of the language was a bit confusing: GOM labels screen rotation as "flip input/output." Not a deal- breaker by any means, but not a labor-intensive fix either.
